MBA in Finance - A lucrative option

Finance or the financial services sector is a field which has seen a lot of global ups and downs in the recent years. However, it has also been a favourite among MBA graduates. In the Indian scenario, the global cycles have not affected this sector in a major way; the services sector has managed to bounce back faster and also managed to maintain its momentum. In the last few years, India has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing economies across the globe. Industry experts feel that this market has the potential for tremendous growth. Serena Kallian offers an in-depth insight…

Back to the roots: The scope of Agribusiness Management

The term agribusiness was coined by renowned Harvard academician, Prof Ray Goldberg in the mid-1950s. It entered management academic circles in the late 1950s. India is no novice to agribusiness management as a systematic methodology and study, yet it continues to find avenues to expand in this sector. Owing to its large rural population, India has always been an agrarian nation despite the sudden growth in the technology and services sectors. According to industry research the total rural market in India is larger than its urban counterpart. Serena Kallian explores the vast opportunities that agribusiness has opened up for value addition, packaging, retailing and export of agricultural products with high application of technology and management.

Are you an Average student? Reach out to Top B-schools

Everyone wants to make it to a top B-school. A perusal of the Class Profiles of top B-schools clearly shows off a breed of students who are great in their academics, extra curricular activities, work profiles etc. A ‘common student’ (much like the ‘common man’) feels alienated in this breed of overachievers. Most students thus end up feeling that the top schools are meant for the ‘A+’ graders, the 99 percentile scorers or top class executives employed in top class corporations. So, before you slot yourself as an ‘average student’ and believe that you are beyond the realms of the top B-school brass, you need to reassess yourself, finds Gauri Puranik.

B-school rankings Reality and Reliability

One can plan one’s journey only if one knows the destination. Short listing schools is a crucial aspect of any MBA aspirant’s application process. Many applicants access popular MBA sites, discussion forums, blogs and even do a thorough research on the schools and programmes. But the starting point of this process is always the school rankings. MBA aspirants refer to the ‘Big 5’ ranking sites viz. Business Week, US News, Financial Times, Economist and the Forbes MBA ranking to get an inkling of the school’s standing and credibility.  Gauri Puranik explores the reliability of these rankings.

Do B-schools build better ENTREPRENEURS?

The growing need for creating entrepreneurially-oriented corporate managers has its obvious implications for our B-schools. Also, when so much of investment is being made for establishing incubators to create high growth startups in various B-schools, it is important that the students grasp the impact of high growth over a time period on entrepreneurial quality of the decision-making processes in such organisations. In this article, Serena Kallian delves deeper into B-school programmes that are targetted at a certain section of corporate leadership.

Radhika Arunkumar probes this unique combination called biotechnology management.

This article does not talk about the statistics of visa rejection. Nor will it draw a trend of the nature of visa rejects. Each individual’s visa interview is unique and the result of the interview is a product of the interaction between the student and the visa officer. In this special report, Gauri Puranik points out certain aspects that you should consider in order to avoid a visa reject. Unless otherwise mentioned, the article refers to US visa. The primary reasons for visa rejection are similar in case of other countries (like UK, Europe, Australia) as well.

Five careers for women MBAs

Women are a formidable force in the world of employment today. Since the past few decades, women have broken all misconceptions about them and jobs, and no person will want to say that a particular job is not fit for a woman. The question is: Are women going beyond the quintessential glass ceiling? We see many women on the Boards of various companies, industries and the financial consultancies. Women are definitely on the top and serve as motivation for others to reach there as well.

Training women entrepreneurs

When it comes to starting their venture or expanding their business enterprise, women are ambitious and clear about the goals but find themselves confused about setting targets and making business plans without a management degree to back them. B-schools have realised this aspect and joined with various agencies to conduct special entrepreneurial training programmes for women to enable them to start their own ventures or survive with the existing ones. Radhika Arunkumar takes a look at the special entrepreneurial training programmes for women by B-schools.

Women at work Equal but Not Identical

Though the glass ceilings are getting thinner, they still do exist for women at workplace. Peers and superiors often perceive women as lacking confidence, unable to relax and be themselves, difficult to get to know, not sufficiently strategic and not as able to use power effectively to engage the organisation. Whether or not these attributes are fairly portrayed, they can keep women from the opportunities they seek, finds Gauri Puranik.

An entry to an MBA school is a life changing experience for almost everyone who has been there. (E)ducation - How Technology is Changing the B-school Experience
- Reshmi Majumdar

Learning is one of those never-ending processes which begin from the day we are born and probably stop only when we breathe our last. Despite certain lacunae and system-specific deficiencies, formal education has been largely accepted as one of the most effective ways to produce learning. Education hones the latent skills of an individual, and as the person graduates from school to college, it prepares him mentally to face the challenges of the professional world (and the complex real world too). However, education in itself has undergone substantial changes in the way that it is delivered or assimilated.

Marketing Yourself
-Sanmeet Sidhu

The word "marketing" implies a buyer-seller interface around a product. The B-school GD-PI round is no exception to this age-old management wisdom; the student assumes the proportions of a seller while the selection panel becomes the insatiable buyer and the student's candidature is the product. The student's task is to offer a value proposition and convince the panel on his suitability for the management programme. Taking the seller-buyer portal forward, the student is able to sell his profile better if he has a connect with the objective of a management programme and the personality traits of students previously selected in top B-schools.

With each of these being allowed an admission limit of 140, it meant that 560 more students could secure the coveted IIM stamp this year, as compared to earlier years. A few months down the line, today, much of what was proposed seems to have been disposed. In the past four decades, the Women’s Movement, changes in demographics and technology and a maturity in civic sense has made ‘Women Education’ a necessity rather than a government initiative. Leave No If’s About IIFT
- Reshma Majithia

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) conducts its own entrance test for admissions to its MBA-IB (International Business) program in the Delhi and Kolkata campus. The test requires you to have good quantitative, verbal comprehension, and logical abilities. A student preparing for other management entrance exams like CAT, XAT etc need not prepare separately for these sections of the test. But one area where this test is different from some of the other entrance tests is that it has a section called general awareness where the general knowledge of the student is tested. This is among the least time-consuming sections and also very high scoring if you keep yourself abreast with the latest news. So it is advisable that you regularly read the newspapers, a political and a business magazine.

Selling versus Marketing: An Eternal Grey Area
- Amit Bapna
