As MBA aspirants in India continue to deal with the implications of the technical glitches that marred the delivery of the first-ever online CAT, a bigger and more scandalous issue rocks the global MBA testing world. On November 23, a Chinese court issued a ruling in favour of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) to the effect that a Chinese test-prep website (under an organization ironically named Beijing Passion Consultancy) had infringed GMAC copyrights. Irregularities charged against them included providing exclusive GMAT materials to test-takers for a fee, such as reconstructed "live" questions from actual GMAT exams, GMAT preparation material, and PDFs of actual test books. The website not only had to apologise publicly in a national newspaper and post a warning from GMAC on its website about the consequences of unfair means, but was also directed to pay a penalty of RMB 520,000 (US$76,000) in compensation to the Council.

CAT Accounts from Day 4 (December 1)
Arjun Chakrabarty, Bangalore: I took the test at CMRIT and I must say it was flawlessly conducted. The process of verification and testing, however, is pretty thorough and time consuming and candidates would be well-prepared to know how it goes: At the first point of entry, the voucher and admit card are checked. The candidate is then directed towards a common area where there is a second round of checking of the documents and ID. After that, he is taken to the location of his test lab. In my case this was done by 1:30, which is two hours prior to the time of my slot (3:30). Here, the candidate has to submit all his belongings except the voucher, admit card and photo identification. One word of caution: what you submit will not be checked by them individually, so make sure you don’t end up submitting your photo ID along with the other belongings because you will have to come back to take it. After this begins the process of fingerprinting, photo-scanning etc., post which a seat number is allotted to the test taker. Once seated at the terminal, the proctor will enter the login id and password. The system will also ask for a verification id which the proctor should tell you. Once this is over, the test starts.

Bangalore-based Leviosa Business School, which invites applications for admissions to its BBM and PGDBM/MBA courses, seems to be a school with a difference. It clearly underplays the obvious offerings of infrastructure and 100% placements – which every other new school does – and emphasizes the difference that participants will derive from the quality education imparted by their “practitioner scholars” – business managers who have over two decades of experience in the most renowned organizations in industry and have recruited from the top B-schools on one hand, and on the other, have been directly associated with academia through teaching stints at top schools as visiting faculty. Thus students at the school get an opportunity to learn from business managers who can expose them to the best of academic instruction and industry insights. This will certainly help them emerge as true leaders in industry and government sectors and even as entrepreneurs.
