THE VISITOR - Reshma Majithia

I have been a denizen of this hotel for more than a decade now. No one can see me, as I am invisible. The other day I was just hovering around when I heard maître d'hôtel speak about a musical soiree. Whoa! I was so excited and jubilant. I decked myself in a suit and was looking forward to the evening. Crystal chandeliers and gilded walls made the hotel a refulgent setting for the soiree. People started pouring in by 8.00 p.m. All the men looked dapper in their suits while the ladies looked alluring in their silks and jewels. They were evidently the glitterati of town.
There was music and a sea of people undulated to the music. There was this young, good-looking lass standing in a corner. I just could not stop ogling her. She looked despondent. I was just walking towards her when a glabrous man pulled her with such celerity, that she almost fell and everyone guffawed at her. She was so abashed. I was so furious and wanted to strangulate him. Later I realised that that nitwit of a guy was her boy friend. Most of them were in an inebriated condition. The party ended at around 1.00 a.m. and gradually I was left in complete solitude.
