According to you, what is the focus of business education imparted in the Deakin International MBA?
The aim of the Deakin MBA is to train globally oriented business leaders who are able to make positive contributions within their organisations and communities. The focus is on ‘profit with principles’; this means graduates understand the importance of sustainable decision-making which delivers on their profits and financial imperatives, while ensuring that their companies make a contribution to higher standards of living and empowerment of individuals around the world.
What attributes do you look for while selecting students to the Deakin MBA Programme?
First and foremost, we are looking for quality students, who have a demonstrated record of high achievement, and those who are focused on having an international career. The minimum requisite is that students must have a three-year bachelor’s degree from a good and reputed Indian institution. In order to acquire an Australian Student Visa, the applicant will also require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
International Outlook is important in Deakin International MBA. In such a scenario, does the School prefer Indian students who have had international work experience or MNC experience?
We are looking for high-achieving students who aspire for an international career; but we do not expect that at this stage of their professional development they would have had an opportunity to acquire this experience. We wish to recruit quality students with a global outlook, able to work effectively in multicultural teams and who are keen to take up positions with MNCs anywhere in the world.
The recent recession affected MBA recruitments all over the world? What steps has Deakin MBA taken to reinforce its position post-recession?
At Deakin we have not faced a decline in our international student numbers as a result of the GFC. We have observed that applications have declined from some regions but these declines have been offset by an increase from other parts of the world. Overall Deakin’s international applications have increased slightly from 2009 to 2010. This can partly be attributed to the fact that when there is an economic downturn, people upgrade their skill set so that when the economy reignites they are in a good position to be at the forefront of the upswing. Deakin’s MBA programme is rated as 5-star by Graduate Management Association of Australia (GMAA).
What are the financial aid opportunities available to Indian students?
Deakin University has an International Scholarship Program (DUISP). This scholarship provides fee reduction of up to Australian $ 8,000 per year based on an annual full-time enrolment of eight credit points and is dependent upon the campus in which the students programme is undertaken. Scholarships are available for undergraduate or postgraduate courses, commencing in either Trimester 1, 2 or 3. More information is available from the following site:
